A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Bran III

In the cave of the last greenseer Bran eats weirwood paste and opens a thousand red eyes: Winterfell long ago, a young Ned praying ÔÇö the past, watching back.

The chapter retold

Deep in the cave of the last greenseer, Bran eats the weirwood paste Bloodraven offers him and is flooded with visions beyond anything his own untrained warging has shown him ÔÇö a thousand years of Winterfell seen through the eyes of trees that have been watching the whole time, including a young Eddard Stark kneeling in prayer in a godswood Bran recognizes as his own home, decades before Bran was born.

The chapter reframes the weirwoods as a kind of vast, patient archive, and BranÔÇÖs gift as something closer to inheritance than accident ÔÇö the past is not gone in this world, merely stored, and the boy who can no longer walk is being trained to walk through centuries instead. It is also, structurally, the moment the book most openly declares its interest in memory as power: BloodravenÔÇÖs thousand eyes are a form of knowledge no army or dragon can match, and BranÔÇÖs education in using them has clearly only just begun.
