A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Asha II

The King's Prize: Stannis's march on Winterfell drowns in snow three days out of Deepwood; horses die, men freeze, and the northern clans mutter of the Night's King.

The chapter retold

StannisÔÇÖs march north from Deepwood Motte, thousands strong when it began, drowns in an early blizzard only three days out ÔÇö horses dying in their traces, men freezing where they stand, the whole grinding column reduced to a slow catastrophe well before it reaches any battlefield. Asha, dragged along as the kingÔÇÖs prize, watches an army fall apart around her, and the northern mountain clans in StannisÔÇÖs ranks begin muttering old, uneasy words about the NightÔÇÖs King, a story sheÔÇÖd assumed was a nursery tale until she watched grown men repeat it like a prayer.

The chapter is the bookÔÇÖs bluntest reminder that winter itself is an antagonist no strategy accounts for ÔÇö StannisÔÇÖs campaign, built on southern assumptions about what an army can endure, is being unmade by weather before the Boltons ever have to lift a sword. AshaÔÇÖs captivity gives the reader a genuinely outside perspective on StannisÔÇÖs stubborn resolve, admiring and appalled in equal measure, watching a king march his own men toward death rather than turn back from a war heÔÇÖs already spent everything on.
