Gared

A grizzled ranger of forty years' service on the Wall, one of the last men to survive a ranging into the haunted forest.

The fuller tale

Gared has spent forty of his fifty-odd years in the Night’s Watch — a lifetime of rangings that cost him both ears and three toes to frostbite and taught him the only lore that matters north of the Wall: respect the cold. He is the veteran of the doomed patrol that opens the tale, the man who argues for turning back, who names the wrongness in the air while his boy commander laughs, and who is proven right in the worst way an old soldier can be.

His part is small and structural: Gared is the institutional memory the Watch no longer listens to. Set beside Ser Waymar’s sable cloak, his cropped ears and careful fear are the order’s two eras in one frame — the Watch that remembers what it was built against, taking orders from the Watch that thinks the enemy is wildlings. When the pale shadows come, the man who survives them is the one who believed in them, and his reward for surviving is the block.

The page and the screen

The tellings trade his ending with Will’s. In the books it is Gared who escapes the massacre, deserts, and is run down in the lands near Winterfell; the second chapter opens with Ned Stark taking his head at a holdfast while Bran watches and learns the old way. The show gives that scene to Will and keeps Gared beyond the Wall, where the White Walkers behead him and set his head rolling at Will’s feet as a message. Book-Gared also gets a past the show omits — Old Nan’s tales aside, he has ridden with the Old Bear himself, and his terror lands harder for coming from a man with nothing left to prove.

The oldest hand on the doomed ranging, he saw what the cold had done and ran. The Wall punishes desertion with the block, and near Winterfell it found him.

In the published books Gared flees the horror in the haunted forest and keeps going — past the Wall, past his vows, half-mad with what he has seen — until Stark men take him near Winterfell as a deserter. Lord Eddard hears no useful sense from him, passes the sentence, and swings Ice himself; the story’s first execution, conducted by its most honorable man, kills the realm’s only living witness to its true enemy. The show ends him earlier and colder: beheaded in the snow by a White Walker’s blade, his head tossed contemptuously at the feet of the comrade who will carry the warning south in his place.
