Lyanna died at the tower of joy in the Red Mountains of Dorne, at the war's very end, in what Ned's memories call a bed of blood ÔÇö childbed fever, the cost of delivering the son the tale will spend decades hiding. Ned fought his way to her past three Kingsguard who died keeping the door, and found his sister dying in a room that smelled of blood and roses; her last strength went into a promise ÔÇö that Ned protect her boy, whose Targaryen name would be a death sentence in Robert's new realm. He kept it by dishonoring himself in the world's eyes, and she went home to the crypts of Winterfell, a northern burial she had asked for over a southern one. The show films the scene twice over through Bran's visions; the books give it only in fragments of fever-dream ÔÇö petals, promises, a fear of storms ÔÇö and readers treasure the gaps.

Where the page and the screen part
The books keep Lyanna entirely in memory ÔÇö Ned's dreams, Robert's grief, the Reeds' Harrenhal story ÔÇö and have never confirmed on the page what the show staged outright: the tower of joy reveal, the bed of blood, the whispered name of her son. Show viewers know R+L=J as fact, annulment, wedding and all; book readers hold the same conclusion as a near-certainty built from dreams and blue roses, technically still awaiting the author's word. The show also simplified her marriage question ÔÇö its Rhaegar had his first marriage annulled, a legal tidiness the books nowhere suggest and which Dornish law arguably would not need, since Targaryens had taken two wives before. And the Knight of the Laughing Tree, her best book moment, never made it to screen at all.
