Book Melessa exists at the edge of Sam's chapters ÔÇö a loving presence, four children, and no scenes of her own; her defiance of Randyll is entirely the show's invention, and one of its kindest. The show also puts Heartsbane's theft and Sam's flight from Horn Hill into her orbit, whereas the books keep Sam's break with his father to the single ultimatum years before. Nothing in the published books threatens her; her house's show-fate has no page counterpart yet, leaving book Melessa mistress of an intact and dangerous Horn Hill.
