Captured with Jon in the Skirling Pass, he ordered the boy to do the one thing that would buy the free folk's trust. He goaded Jon into the fight and died on his sword ÔÇö a ranger spending his own life like a coin, for the Watch.

Hunted through the Skirling Pass, the great ranger ordered Jon to turn his cloak and buy the free folk's trust with a death. He came at Jon like a storm and died on Longclaw as Ghost's teeth closed ÔÇö exactly as he intended.
He dies on Jon SnowÔÇÖs sword, exactly as he planned. In the books, cornered in the Skirling Pass with the RattleshirtÔÇÖs hunters closing, Qhorin names Jon his brother one last time, then comes at him like a storm ÔÇö giving the boy no choice and the watching wildlings no doubt ÔÇö and falls to Longclaw with Ghost at his leg, murmuring that sharp steel is a better death than the ones on offer. The show stages the same transaction inside the wildling camp: a picked quarrel, a seized blade, a fight Qhorin conducts like a lesson until Jon runs him through before RattleshirtÔÇÖs whole band. His last words bless the mission ÔÇö and the free folk, believing they have watched a crow kill a crow, open their world to the spy the Halfhand died to plant. The Watch never gives him a pyre; his monument is everything Jon does after.

Where the page and the screen part
The screen compresses the Skirling Pass ÔÇö the long hunt through the heights, the dwindling of the scouting party man by man, and QhorinÔÇÖs methodical grooming of Jon for the role all shrink to a few scenes of captivity, with the Halfhand sowing JonÔÇÖs cover story from inside the wildling column by picking loud fights with him. The books keep the two free until the end and give the final fight a witness the show omits: Ghost, whose teeth close on QhorinÔÇÖs calf in the last exchange, letting the ranger die knowing the tale the wildlings will tell is airtight. His great line ÔÇö ÔÇ£our honor means no more than our lives, so long as the realm is safeÔÇØ ÔÇö is the booksÔÇÖ cleanest statement of the WatchÔÇÖs creed, and the show wisely keeps its substance.
