The show reduced Quaithe to a striking curiosity: a masked woman in Qarth for a handful of second-season scenes ÔÇö painting protective sigils on a sailor bound for dangerous waters, warning Jorah that the dragons are coveted and that he must guard his queen ÔÇö and then gone, never named in full, never returned. The booksÔÇÖ Quaithe is a different order of presence: a recurring apparition whose glass-candle visitations pursue Daenerys to Meereen, whose riddling itinerary readers treat as the roadmap of the unwritten books, and whose prophecy of the perils converging on the queen ÔÇö sunÔÇÖs son, mummerÔÇÖs dragon and the rest ÔÇö catalogues characters the show never adapted at all. She is alive in the novels, insofar as the word applies to someone who may not be entirely anywhere, and her counsel remains the booksÔÇÖ standing hint that DaenerysÔÇÖs story runs deeper than the war for any throne.
