Tobho Mott

A master armorer of King's Landing, trained in the mysteries of Qohor, whose shop turns out the finest steel in the city ÔÇö and takes on the most promising apprentices.

A soul born at Qohor.

The fuller tale

How it ends for them

The chronicle records no death for this soul ÔÇö they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.

Their chapters, book by book

A Game of Thrones 1 chapter that name them

Where the page and the screen part

The books credit him by name with the saga's most symbolically loaded metalwork ÔÇö the destruction of Ice and the forging of the two swords that become Oathkeeper and Widow's Wail, plus the gilding of the Hound's helm for its grim later career on another man's head ÔÇö where the show stages the reforging as an anonymous smith under Tywin's supervision in a wordless season-opening sequence, and Tobho himself appears only in the early seasons as Gendry's master. His shop's fate diverges accordingly: book Tobho is alive and working as of the published novels, his forge busy and his secrets intact, while show Tobho simply vanishes from the story once Gendry rows away ÔÇö an armorer the series no longer needed, left unmentioned and presumably hammering on. In both tellings he is that rarest of King's Landing figures, a man of genuine excellence who survives by selling to all sides and belonging to none.

Their journey

Where the two tellings send them to the same place the road runs whole; where they part, the screen keeps the left and the books the right.
