Vayon Poole

The steward of Winterfell, who keeps the castle's accounts and household, and travels south in Lord Stark's service.

The fuller tale

Every castle in the songs runs on lords and knights; every castle in fact runs on a man like Vayon Poole. Winterfell's steward keeps the accounts, assigns the chambers, pays the household and knows to the sack how much grain stands between the North and a hungry winter — the invisible profession the tale glances at just long enough to show it existing. When Lord Eddard is named Hand, Poole goes south to run the Tower of the Hand as he ran Winterfell, bringing his daughter Jeyne, Sansa's dearest friend, along for the adventure of a lifetime in the capital.

His small screen of story is all competence and no luck. He manages the Hand's household through tourneys, plots and his lord's investigation without ever being told what any of it means — stewards are paid to arrange the chairs, not to know why the council sits in them — and his reward for faithful service is to be standing in exactly the wrong tower on exactly the wrong day. The tale remembers him mostly through what he leaves behind: a daughter alone in King's Landing, whose fate becomes one of the books' cruelest threads.

The page and the screen

Both tellings dispose of Vayon identically and differ only in what his death sets up. In the show he is a face in the purge and little more. In the books his death detonates slowly through his daughter: orphaned Jeyne is handed to Littlefinger, and the steward's girl resurfaces volumes later at the center of the Boltons' great fraud — a plotline the show reassigned wholesale to Sansa Stark. Vayon himself is thus that rare figure whose adaptation footprint is measured almost entirely in consequences he never lives to see.

Winterfell's steward followed Lord Stark to King's Landing and died with the rest of the household when the Lannisters struck, cut down in the purge that spared almost no one wearing grey.

When Ned Stark moved against Joffrey's succession and Littlefinger's gold cloaks turned, the Lannister answer was total: every man, woman and servant of the Hand's household was put to the sword in the purge, and Winterfell's steward died with the rest, cut down in the tower he kept. The books linger on the completeness of it — guardsmen, septa, stable hands, all of it done in an hour — and on the single omission that matters: his daughter Jeyne, taken alive into Littlefinger's keeping, which readers come to understand was not mercy. Vayon Poole's death has no scene of its own in either telling; he is one name in the bill for his lord's honor, which is precisely the kind of accounting he would have kept perfectly.
