S3┬ÀE5 ÔÇö Kissed by Fire
The hour retold
Fire runs through the hour like a signature. It opens in a hollow hill with the Hound on trial before the Brotherhood, facing Beric Dondarrion and a sword that lights like a torch ÔÇö the one thing Sandor Clegane fears, swung by a man who cannot stay dead. The Hound wins, because the gods of this story are not sentimental, and Beric dies his sixth death and gets up again, diminished ÔÇö each return, Thoros admits, leaves a little less of him. Meanwhile Jon Snow, in a cave north of the Wall, breaks the vow everyone breaks and keeps the one that matters; kissed by fire, Ygritte says of her own red hair, lucky ÔÇö and for one stolen hour the show lets two people be happy, which regular viewers correctly read as a storm warning.
The episodeÔÇÖs true center is a bathtub at Harrenhal, where a feverish Jaime Lannister finally tells someone the story he has carried for seventeen years: the Mad King, the caches of wildfire under the city, burn them all ÔÇö and the choice between his oath and half a million lives. By what right does the wolf judge the lion, he asks, and faints into BrienneÔÇÖs arms, and the realmÔÇÖs shorthand for broken honor becomes, for the audience at least, its most misjudged man. The counterexample arrives at Riverrun: Rickard Karstark butchers two Lannister boy hostages in their cells, and Robb ÔÇö honorable exactly like his father, and exactly as expensively ÔÇö takes his head over every adviserÔÇÖs protest. Justice costs him half his army by morning. Doing the right thing, the season keeps repeating, is a bill, not a reward.
