S4┬ÀE4 ÔÇö Oathkeeper
The hour retold
An episode named for a sword, organized around what oaths are worth. Jaime ÔÇö freshly returned, publicly useless, and privately reassembling himself ÔÇö gives Brienne the Valyrian blade his father forged from Ned StarkÔÇÖs greatsword, plus armor, plus Podrick, and a commission that is really a conscience: find Sansa Stark, keep her safe. Brienne names the sword Oathkeeper, which is either irony or repair depending on the light ÔÇö Stark steel, Lannister guilt, and the two most oath-burdened people in the realm dividing one promise between them. It is the seasonÔÇÖs cleanest transaction: for once, something of value goes to someone who deserves it.
The rest of the hour is oath-breaking in ascending order. In Meereen, Daenerys answers the crucified children of the road with a hundred and sixty-three crucified masters and calls it justice while Barristan urges mercy ÔÇö the first time her arithmetic openly frightens her own council. At CrasterÔÇÖs Keep, the WatchÔÇÖs mutineers drink from the Old BearÔÇÖs skull, having broken every vow the order owns, and BranÔÇÖs party blunders into their hands. And in the far north, the episode quietly detonates its biggest reveal: a White Walker carries CrasterÔÇÖs last son to an altar of ice, and a crowned figure lays a nail of a finger on the childÔÇÖs cheek ÔÇö blue eyes opening on a transformation the books had only whispered about. The dead are not just rising; they are being made. Somebody, it turns out, has been keeping the oldest bargain in the story all along.
