S8┬ÀE1 ÔÇö Winterfell
The hour retold
Daenerys and Jon ride into a Winterfell that does not cheer for them, and the seasonÔÇÖs opening hour is honest about the cost of the alliance the last one ended on: the North sees a foreign queen, foreign soldiers, and two dragons overhead, and does the arithmetic on what an army that size actually eats. Sam, arriving from Oldtown with the seasonÔÇÖs cruelest piece of news, learns that his father and brother were burned for refusing to kneel ÔÇö burned, in fact, by the very queen now standing in his familyÔÇÖs ancestral hall ÔÇö and then, in the crypts, by candlelight, gives Jon the truth about his parentage in the gentlest, most devastating way the show has delivered exposition all series.
Jaime Lannister arrives alone, having ridden the length of the continent on the promise he made and broke and is now trying to keep for real, and finds Bran Stark waiting in the courtyard with a stare that needs no words to remind him exactly what he did to that boy years and one bad war ago. Farther north, at Last Hearth, the advance scouts of JonÔÇÖs army find the young Lord Umber pinned to a wall in a spiral of severed limbs ÔÇö not a battle, but a signature, the Night KingÔÇÖs calling card left for the living to interpret exactly as intended: he is coming, and he is already south of where anyone thought he could be.
