The Bloody Gate
The narrow pass where the Knight of the Gate asks who would enter the Vale ÔÇö and armies die asking.
The fuller tale
The Bloody Gate is where the high road ends and the Vale begins ÔÇö twin watchtowers pinched between mountain walls, a battlement bridging the pass, and beneath it the only gap an army can use. Its name is a tally: waves of invaders have broken against it across the centuries, and the mountain ravens have never gone hungry. Its keeper holds the ValeÔÇÖs most storied military office, the Knight of the Gate, and greets every arrival with the ritual challenge ÔÇö who would pass the Bloody Gate? ÔÇö a question that has outlived every dynasty that ever answered it wrong.
The story uses the Gate as a valve. Catelyn brings her hostage dwarf through it ahead of pursuing clansmen; years later a girl and a broken knight are turned away at the threshold by news of a death inside ÔÇö the taleÔÇÖs driest joke about timing, since the Vale beyond held the aunt she sought, dead three days. The GateÔÇÖs meaning holds constant throughout: the Vale chooses its wars, and everyone else waits in the pass.
