A river town on the lower Rhoyne, under the sway of Volantis.

The fuller tale

Volon Therys spreads along the west bank of the lower Rhoyne, last of the Volantene river towns before the great city itself ÔÇö a crossing place of ferries, fish markets and garrison walls where the river runs already miles wide. Like its sisters it belongs to Volantis and history mostly forgets it; the books do not. It is beneath the walls of Volon Therys that the Shy MaidÔÇÖs long voyage ends and the taleÔÇÖs buried conspiracy surfaces in daylight: the Golden Company, greatest and most expensive of the free companies, stands mustered on the plain ÔÇö ten thousand men, their elephants, and the gilded skulls of their dead captains ÔÇö waiting for a hidden prince.

In the camp there, Jon Connington and the boy called Young Griff make the choice that redirects the whole eastern war: with Daenerys mired in Meereen and half a world away, the company will not sail to her ÔÇö she will be brought the war instead. They strike for Westeros directly, an invasion the show never films, launched from a river town most maps do not trouble to name. The Rhoyne has carried a great many armies; Volon Therys is where it launches the strangest one.
