Season One
In We Light the Way ÔÇö A dragonrider of the Stepstones, wed to a princess, in love with a knight. Viserys sails to Driftmark to mend the realm's two dragon houses: Rhaenyra will wed Laenor Velaryon, and their sons will sit the throne. Rhaenyra and Laenor strike a private bargain ÔÇö a marriage of duty, with room for what each of them actually wants. Rhaenyra and Daemon wed on Dragonstone's shore in the old Valyrian way ÔÇö over a fresh corpse in Laenor's clothes, while Laenor rows for Essos, alive and free.

How it ends for them

The book gives Laenor no mummer's escape: he was cut down at a fair in Spicetown by his friend and favorite Ser Qarl Correy, who fled and was never found. A quarrel between lovers, said some. A bought blade, said everyone watching Daemon marry his widow.
The show does not record Laenor's death as real: it stages his murder as fiction, arranged between Rhaenyra, Daemon and Qarl Correy so that Laenor can slip away from Westeros entirely and live out the remainder of his life somewhere the war cannot reach him, a body double burned or buried in his place to satisfy the court's need for a funeral.
Fire & Blood permits him no such escape. The book records that Laenor was slain at a fair in Spicetown by his own friend and favorite, Ser Qarl Correy, who fled the scene and was never afterward found. The histories offer competing explanations ÔÇö a lovers' quarrel gone fatal, in some accounts; a bought blade in the service of Daemon's marriage plans, in the more suspicious ones ÔÇö but none of them end with Laenor Velaryon still breathing.

Where the page and the screen part
This is among the largest gaps between the two tellings. The show has Laenor's death staged as a fiction: Ser Qarl Correy kills a body double to fake Laenor's murder, allowing the real Laenor to escape overseas and live out his life quietly and anonymously, freeing Rhaenyra to marry Daemon without a living husband complicating matters. Fire & Blood offers no such mercy ÔÇö the book records a real killing, Laenor cut down at a fair in Spicetown by Qarl Correy himself, with no staged substitute and no surviving Laenor waiting in exile. The show's invention gives one of the war's few genuinely happy endings to a character the book simply kills.
