The fuller tale

Lord of Oldtown and commander of the greens' great southern host, Ormund brings the full weight of Hightower resources and manpower to the war's southern front, marching up the roseroad with Daeron Targaryen and the she-dragon Tessarion providing air cover overhead.

His campaign is, for its early stretch, one of the greens' genuine successes — a long run of victories that steadily pushes back Rhaenyra's western and riverland allies and makes Ormund, briefly, the war's most consistently effective field commander on either side.

The page and the screen

Ormund exists only in the book's telling; the show, as currently aired, has not introduced this southern campaign or its commander, one of several fronts Fire & Blood covers in far greater military detail than the series has yet dramatized.

The books: Cut down at First Tumbleton (F&B, ch. 5)

The Lord of Oldtown led the greens' great host up the roseroad for a year of slow victories — until First Tumbleton, where the dragonseeds he'd bought turned their fire on his own camp. He died under Vermithor's shadow with his banners burning.

The show has no equivalent figure or campaign to draw a fate from.

Fire & Blood ends his run of victories abruptly at First Tumbleton, where the dragonseed riders the greens purchased to bolster their forces turn their borrowed dragons on the camp that hired them. Ormund Hightower dies under Vermithor's shadow with his own banners burning around him, the greens' most successful commander undone by an alliance his own side arranged and could not control.
