A fortress carved into a golden rock above the Sunset Sea, seat of the wealthiest house in the Seven Kingdoms.

The fuller tale

Casterly Rock declares early and firmly for the greens — Lord Jason Lannister throws the westerlands’ gold and swords behind Aegon II almost as soon as the crown is contested, while his twin brother Ser Tyland Lannister is named master of ships and, later, master of coin in the green council, tying the family’s fortune to Alicent’s cause at the very top of the government. It is not a cheap loyalty: Jason Lannister marches a westerlands army east to punish the riverlands’ defection to the blacks and is killed for it in the fighting near the Red Fork, one of the war’s more senior casualties.

With its lord dead, Casterly Rock does not so much waver as simply endure — Jason’s widow, Lady Johanna Lannister, holds the Rock itself and bars its gates against the ironborn raiders who come sniffing around the western coast while every mainland lord is distracted by the civil war, and the castle proves, as it always has, too strong to take by anyone lacking a great deal of patience and a very large fleet. The gold beneath it keeps the green war machine paid long after the battlefield news turns bad.
