The fuller tale

RookÔÇÖs Rest, a modest Staunton castle two days from KingÔÇÖs Landing by road and far less by wing, hosts one of the DanceÔÇÖs few genuinely decisive battles ÔÇö and it is a trap from the start. Aegon IIÔÇÖs faction lets word reach Rhaenyra that the castle is lightly held and ripe for the taking, hoping to draw a black dragon within reach of two green ones waiting in ambush; Rhaenys Targaryen, unwilling to let her queen fly into a snare meant for her, answers the bait herself, astride old Meleys.

The battle that follows is the DanceÔÇÖs first true dragon-on-dragon slaughter. Meleys, ancient and canny, very nearly wins outright ÔÇö Aegon II is grievously burned and Sunfyre crippled before Aemond arrives on Vhagar, the largest living dragon in the world, and the arithmetic finally turns against the Queen Who Never Was. Rhaenys and Meleys fall together over RookÔÇÖs Rest, taking with them any illusion that this war might stay a war of armies rather than a war of dragons.

RookÔÇÖs Rest itself is almost incidental to the battle fought in its sky ÔÇö a small castle that gives its name to the moment the Dance stops being political and starts being an extermination, one dragon at a time, of the very creatures that built the dynasty fighting over them.

Meleys the Red Queen dies with her teeth in Sunfyre's throat; the king falls with her, burned half to nothing, and the realm passes to the regent Aemond ÔÇö one eye, one dragon, no restraint.
