Gwayne Hightower

Otto's son, Alicent's brother — an Oldtown knight of polish and unexpected dry humor, riding north with Ser Criston's host.

The fuller tale

Otto's son and Alicent's brother, Gwayne is an Oldtown knight of considerable polish and an unexpected, dry sense of humor that sets him apart from the grim earnestness of most of his family's political operators — a Hightower who seems, by most accounts, to actually enjoy being alive rather than merely being useful.

He rides north with Ser Criston Cole's host as one of the greens' more capable field commanders, lending the Hightower name direct martial weight to a war his family did as much as anyone to start.

The page and the screen

Gwayne is a relatively minor figure in Fire & Blood's dense chronicle, and the show's aired seasons have given him more developed screen presence and personality than the book's brief mentions — one of several cases where the ongoing series has chosen to flesh out a name the history books mostly just record in passing.

Their fate — if death has found them, it is written here. Open at your peril.

The chronicle records no death for this soul — they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.
