Lord Butterwell's grim good-son, a black-bearded knight with a dark reputation and a sword always half-drawn. Whatever is rotten at Whitewalls, he is near the middle of it.
The fuller tale
Lord Ambrose Butterwell’s good-son by marriage, Black Tom carries himself through the wedding at Whitewalls like a man perpetually one insult away from drawing steel — a black-bearded, grim-reputationed knight whose presence among the guests unsettles people who cannot quite say why. He is not the plot’s architect, nor its figurehead, but he is unmistakably near its center, the sort of man other conspirators trust with the parts of the work that require a willingness to use a sword rather than merely plan around one.
What exactly Black Tom believes about the Blackfyre cause he has attached himself to — conviction, family obligation through his marriage into House Butterwell, or simple opportunism — the tale never entirely clarifies, and the ambiguity suits him. He is defined less by ideology than by function: the man standing at the gates when the household’s careful conspiracy finally has to become a fight.
That function proves to be his last. When Bloodraven’s forces close around Whitewalls and the rebellion’s plotters realize the celebration they hid behind has failed to hide anything, it is Black Tom who holds the gate — and Black Tom whose defense of it puts him directly, and fatally, in Ser Duncan the Tall’s path.
The page and the screen
As with the rest of the Whitewalls conspirators, Black Tom Heddle’s story belongs to The Mystery Knight, which no season of the show has yet adapted. There is accordingly no performance to compare against the page; the character’s brief but violent role at the novella’s climax gives whoever eventually plays him a compact, high-impact showcase whenever the production reaches that far.

Lord Butterwell's grim good-son held the gates of Whitewalls with treason on his sword when Bloodraven's army ringed the castle. He crossed steel with Ser Duncan the Tall and died of it, in the last fight of the Second Blackfyre Rebellion — a rebellion that never managed a battle.
The end comes for him at the gates of Whitewalls, sword in hand, holding a line that has already lost. Bloodraven’s army has surrounded the castle by the time the fighting starts, and there is no realistic outcome left for the men defending it — only the manner of the losing. Ser Duncan the Tall crosses steel with him in the chaos of that last stand, and Black Tom Heddle dies of it, one of the very few casualties in a rebellion that otherwise collapses almost entirely without a pitched battle.
