Lord of Ashford on the banks of the Cockleswhent, he throws open his lands in the year 209 for a tourney held in his young daughter’s honor — a fortnight of pavilions, jousting, and the kind of prestige a minor lord rarely gets to host, drawing princes, champions, and half the notable chivalry of the Reach to a meadow that would otherwise see nothing grander than a market fair.
What he could not have anticipated, in all his planning for a celebration meant to showcase his family and his daughter’s marriageability, is that his meadow would become the stage for a royal tragedy instead — a puppeteer’s broken fingers, a hedge knight’s trial, and a prince’s death, all unfolding on ground he provided for an altogether more modest purpose. His tourney is remembered by history not for who won it, since the melee itself is never finished and his daughter weds none of her champions, but for the trial that consumed it instead.
