Ser Willem Wylde

A knight of the Kingsguard under King Daeron the Good, sworn to shield the royal blood — and so to fight for it, even against six men in the right.

The fuller tale

The third of the Kingsguard knights bound to fight in Aerion’s seven, Ser Willem Wylde of the stormlands shares his fellow white cloaks’ particular affliction: sworn to defend the royal blood as an institution, and therefore obligated to take up arms even against six men whose cause the whole meadow privately understands to be the more honorable one.

His presence in the trial underlines, alongside Crakehall and Donnel, one of the tale’s quieter arguments — that an oath sworn without room for judgment can become its own kind of trap, binding good men to fight for causes their own consciences would otherwise reject. The white cloak asks obedience first and rightness a distant second, and Willem Wylde pays that particular oath’s cost same as his brothers in white.

The page and the screen

Ser Willem Wylde’s role in the show, where featured, matches the novella’s brief but pointed use of him — one of three Kingsguard knights whose obligated presence in the trial gives the fight its most uncomfortable moral texture.

Their fate — if death has found them, it is written here. Open at your peril.

The chronicle records no death for this soul — they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.
