Their story
Master armorer of Ashford Meadow’s tourney grounds, Steely Pate runs his forge with the gruff efficiency of a craftsman who has heard every excuse a poor knight has ever offered for why his gear doesn’t fit, and has stopped being impressed by any of them. What he offers Dunk — proper armor, fitted and functional rather than scavenged and ill-matched — is a small mercy dressed up as a business transaction.
His fairness matters more than his gruffness might initially suggest. In a tourney increasingly defined by whose favor a knight can claim and whose birth commands automatic respect, Pate deals in steel and workmanship alone, standing by the quality of what he makes regardless of who is wearing it — a craftsman’s honesty operating, quietly, as its own small counterweight to the tale’s grander injustices.

Youssef Kerkour brings Steely Pate to the screen in the show’s opening season, a compact but well-remembered supporting turn in a story largely populated by knights and princes rather than tradesmen — a reminder, consistent with the novella’s own instincts, that Ashford Meadow runs on more than noble ambition alone.
