The fuller tale
We Do Not Sow is not decoration on the ironborn's banners so much as an actual economic policy — reaving rather than farming, taking rather than growing, a philosophy the Iron Islands have practiced in one form or another since long before any Andal king thought to ask their opinion of it. The golden kraken flies over people who genuinely mean the words.
Pyke's rocky poverty has always made the Old Way as much necessity as ideology, and every generation produces a lord who leans harder into it than his predecessor found comfortable — which is exactly the shape this era takes under Dagon Greyjoy, remembered even in his own lifetime as the Last Reaver for reviving raiding on a scale the isles had not attempted in decades.
His targets are chosen with a raider's contempt for anyone too distracted to notice him coming: Lannisport, seat of the wealthiest house in the Seven Kingdoms, burned and looted while the crown's attention sits fixed on the black dragon's exiles across the narrow sea; the Stony Shore of the North, raided again and again while Lord Beron Stark scrambles to answer him with men the southern lords never think to lend.
It is, from the vantage of Ashford Meadow or Whitewalls, a war happening at the edge of the map and barely worth a tourney-goer's gossip — which is precisely how an ironborn reaver prefers his wars conducted, and precisely why Dagon Greyjoy's name means considerably more on the western coast and in the North than it does anywhere the tales' princes actually gather.
The page and the screen
Dagon Greyjoy's campaign belongs to The Mystery Knight's frame story rather than to any dramatized scene, and no season has yet adapted it; the show's first year never travels north or west of the Reach and riverlands, leaving the ironborn war entirely a page-only affair for now.
