Quentyn Martell puts his mad plan into motion: with Gerris and Arch and a handful of bribed keepers, he descends into the pit beneath the Great Pyramid where Viserion and Rhaegal lie chained, armed with a whip and a dragontamerÔÇÖs theory that fire and blood can be commanded by anyone bold enough to try. He is wrong, catastrophically and immediately ÔÇö a whip is not blood, whatever old Valyrian conceits told him otherwise ÔÇö and RhaegalÔÇÖs flame catches him before he can so much as strike the chains free.
The chapter is the bookÔÇÖs cruelest illustration of its own magic systemÔÇÖs actual rules: dragons answer blood, not confidence, and QuentynÔÇÖs death punishes exactly the kind of second-hand ambition that sent him across the world in the first place ÔÇö a prince chasing his fatherÔÇÖs marriage pact rather than his own desire, paying with his body for a plan that was never really his to carry out. He does not die in the pit itself but lingers three agonizing days afterward, the fire finishing its verdict slowly, and the failed theft leaves both dragons more dangerous and less contained than they were before he ever climbed down to them.
What the chapter sets loose matters as much as what it ends: Viserion and Rhaegal, panicked and half-freed by the chaos of the attempt, are no longer safely chained beneath Meereen, and a Dornish prince who crossed a continent to marry a queen he never even got to meet dies for a whip and a legend, unmourned by anyone who isnÔÇÖt already grieving him from very far away.
