The chapter retold
A raven brings Jon a letter written in a voice unmistakably Ramsay BoltonÔÇÖs, vicious even by his standards ÔÇö the Pink Letter, mocking StannisÔÇÖs supposed death, claiming ManceÔÇÖs spearwives, Reek, and ÔÇÖhisÔÇÖ bride are all wanted back at Winterfell, and threatening every soul at the Wall who refuses. Whatever Jon actually believes about the letterÔÇÖs truth, he cannot ignore the possibility that Stannis is dead and the North undefended, and he does what the letter is daring him to do: he calls the Watch, and the free folk beside it, to march.
It is the decision his officers have been quietly building toward opposing for the length of the entire book ÔÇö a Lord Commander proposing to lead sworn brothers south, off the Wall, to fight a war that has nothing to do with the WatchÔÇÖs ancient purpose, on behalf of people some of them have never stopped calling wildling enemies. Bowen Marsh and the men around him do not argue. They draw their knives instead, and Jon Snow goes down in the snow of his own courtyard with his own brothersÔÇÖ blades in him, the last words he hears the ones the Watch swore to each other at the Wall: for the Watch.
The book ends JonÔÇÖs arc, for now, at the precise point where mercy and command finally collided past any possibility of compromise ÔÇö every wildling he saved, every officer he overruled, every Slynt he executed and every Marsh he ignored, arrives here as a debt called in all at once. Whether the wound is mortal the text pointedly refuses to say, closing on blood in the snow rather than a body, and the whole northern half of the story is left holding its breath on the single most consequential cliffhanger the saga has yet allowed itself.
