The kennelman's plot to murder his officers at the Fist died under a triple horn-blast: the Others came first. The books' third volume opens with his last watch, cold hands closing in through the snow.
His end comes on the Fist of the First Men, the night his mutiny was to begin. The plan is set, the knives are picked ÔÇö and then the horn sounds three times, the signal no living brother has ever heard, and the Others fall on the Great Ranging out of the storm. The prologue closes with Chett fumbling frozen-fingered at his blade as the snow walks toward him, all his careful spite converted in an instant into the terror of a small man in a very old war; the books leave him among the hundreds who never came down from the Fist. The show, having no Chett, owed him no death ÔÇö his mutiny simply detonates later, at CrasterÔÇÖs, in other menÔÇÖs hands.

Where the page and the screen part
Chett never appears in the show at all; his function is divided among the mutineers the screen does name. Rast inherits his whining malice, Karl Tanner his predatory leadership, and the general grievance of the WatchÔÇÖs worst men ÔÇö that they were promised survival, not sacrifice ÔÇö arrives on screen fully formed at CrasterÔÇÖs Keep without the slow fuse the book prologue lights. Show-Sam also keeps a trace of him: the hostility Sam meets from certain brothers over his soft duties is ChettÔÇÖs grudge with the name filed off. Readers meet him only once, in the third bookÔÇÖs prologue, but his eyes are the ones through which the books stage the horn blasts that announce the OthersÔÇÖ assault on the Fist ÔÇö one of the sagaÔÇÖs great curtain-raisings.
