The free folk chieftain put her daughters on the boats at Hardhome first, then stood in the shield line when the dead came over the palisade. A ring of dead children brought her spear down ÔÇö she couldn't strike them ÔÇö and she rose again with the rest.
She dies at Hardhome, in the battle she almost survived. With her daughters safe on the boats and the palisade fallen, Karsi cuts her way toward the shore ÔÇö and comes face to face with a pack of wight children, blue-eyed and small as her own girls. The spear that never hesitated hesitates; she cannot strike them, and they swarm her down. The episodeÔÇÖs final cruelty is precise: the Night King raises the fieldÔÇÖs dead with a slow lift of his arms, and Karsi stands up again among them, eyes burning blue ÔÇö the mother who saved her children conscripted into the army that will hunt them. No death in the show argues the stakes of the war more efficiently.

Karsi is a pure show creation; no such chieftain appears in the books. The novels never visit Hardhome at all ÔÇö the rescue mission is Cotter PykeÔÇÖs, launched by sea from Eastwatch, and everything the reader learns arrives in his laconic, ominous letters to Jon Snow: witches, wrecks, hunger, and dead things in the water. The show sailed the camera where the books sent only correspondence, invented Karsi to give the massacre a human center, and in doing so converted one of the sagaÔÇÖs great off-page dreads into its most celebrated battle hour. Her narrative function ÔÇö the sympathetic wildling parent whose fate indicts the audienceÔÇÖs own detachment ÔÇö is the show doing in one episode what the books do across JonÔÇÖs whole Wall arc.
