The hour retold
An hour of departures, all of them down roads that will not be untraveled. The court rides south with Sansa dreaming of queenship and Arya fencing with breadsticks; Jon and Tyrion turn north toward the Wall, the bastard and the dwarf finding a wary kinship in being their familiesÔÇÖ spare parts. JonÔÇÖs farewell gifts frame everything ÔÇö a sword for Arya, slim enough for her hand, named Needle as a joke on the ladylike arts she hates. Behind them all, Bran sleeps on while a hired knife comes for him with Valyrian steel, and Catelyn learns what a motherÔÇÖs hands and a direwolfÔÇÖs jaws can do. The dagger that fails to kill her son becomes the reason she rides south in secret ÔÇö carrying, though she cannot know it, the war in her saddlebag.
The episodeÔÇÖs dark heart is on the kingsroad, where a butcherÔÇÖs boy plays at swords with Arya and a princeÔÇÖs wounded vanity becomes a body count. Joffrey lies, Sansa equivocates, and the machinery of power does the rest: Nymeria driven off with thrown stones, the innocent Lady executed in her place because a queen demanded a wolf and any wolf would do. Ned swings the sword himself ÔÇö the old way, wasted on a new kind of injustice. It is the hour where the Stark childrenÔÇÖs illusions start dying in order of age, and where Daenerys, half a world away, begins the opposite journey: learning in DrogoÔÇÖs tent that even a sold bride can decide what happens next.
