S1┬ÀE3 ÔÇö Lord Snow
The hour retold
Everyone arrives where they were going, and everywhere turns out to be worse than advertised. Ned reaches KingÔÇÖs Landing to find the crown six million in debt ÔÇö half of it to the father of the queen ÔÇö and a small council where the whisperer, the moneylender and the old maester all smile with too many teeth. At Castle Black, Jon expects the storied brotherhood of the songs and gets thieves, rapers and grey old men holding seven hundred feet of ice; his sulk about it lasts precisely until Tyrion points out that sneering at broken men is a luxury for boys raised in castles. The episode is a matched pair of disillusionments ÔÇö the realmÔÇÖs two great institutions, throne and Watch, both running on fumes and reputation.
The quiet scenes carry the freight. Catelyn, smuggled into a brothel by Littlefinger, leaves the capital with a name for the dagger ÔÇö Tyrion Lannister ÔÇö which happens to be a lie that will start a war. Old Nan tells a broken boy about the Long Night, when the White Walkers came the first time, and the show files the story away in plain sight. And in a sunlit room, a Braavosi fencing master takes a small girl through her first lesson while her father watches, smiling ÔÇö until the wooden swords start sounding, to NedÔÇÖs ears, like steel. SyrioÔÇÖs water dance is the one gift Ned gives that outlives everything: swift as a deer, quiet as a shadow, and not knitting.
