S2·E3 — What Is Dead May Never Die

Joffrey I Baratheon holds the throne Hand: Tyrion Lannister, acting Hand

The hour retold

What is dead may never die, the drowned priest intones, and Theon Greyjoy rises from the water baptized into a family that does not want him. The episode hands him the season’s cruelest choice with total clarity: a letter to Robb would save the brother he grew up with and damn the father he just recovered. He holds it over a candle and watches his old life burn — a small, quiet, entirely self-inflicted catastrophe, and the show’s most patient tragedy begins in earnest. On Pyke they pay the iron price; Theon pays in the only currency he has, which is other people’s trust.

The other threads sharpen by contrast. Catelyn arrives at Renly’s camp to find a hundred thousand men playing at war between tourneys — summer knights, she notes, and winter is coming — and the hour introduces Brienne of Tarth by having her beat Loras Tyrell in front of everyone and ask only for a place in the Kingsguard. In the capital, Tyrion runs a leak-detection sting worthy of a spymaster: three marriage rumors, three councillors, three different brides, and Pycelle’s beard pays for the betrayal. And on the kingsroad, Yoren dies as he lived — refusing to hand anyone over — while the survivors of his recruit column, Arya among them, are dragged toward Harrenhal in chains. The old protections are burning off the story one by one.
