S2┬ÀE8 ÔÇö The Prince of Winterfell
The hour retold
The held breath before the green fire. StannisÔÇÖs fleet is at sea, and KingÔÇÖs Landing prepares in its characteristic way: Joffrey plans heroics, Cersei plans hostages, and Tyrion counts wildfire jars and chain links with Bronn, conducting the defense of the city out of a workshop and a brothel. The episodeÔÇÖs craft is in the countdown ÔÇö every scene in the capital is timed against the sails on the horizon, and the only man doing his job is the one the city will never thank.
The rest of the map is a study in prices. Yara arrives at Winterfell with ironborn sense ÔÇö the castle is indefensible, the sea is home, come away ÔÇö and Theon refuses, because coming away would mean the boys died for nothing, which they did. Robb, learning his mother has freed the Kingslayer on her own authority to ransom the girls, puts Catelyn under guard while Brienne rows Jaime downriver on the warÔÇÖs least promising diplomatic mission. Arya spends JaqenÔÇÖs last owed death not on a name but on an exit, and walks out HarrenhalÔÇÖs front gate past dead guards ÔÇö a man keeps his word, precisely. And beneath Winterfell, the episode plays its gentlest card: Bran and Rickon never fled at all, and are hiding in the crypts below TheonÔÇÖs feet, closer to home than anyone dares be.
