The fuller tale

Casterly Rock is not a castle on a hill; it is the hill. The Lannisters live inside a colossal stone outcrop above the Sunset Sea ÔÇö halls, stables, barracks and vaults tunneled through living rock that stands, the boast runs, three times the height of the Wall, with the gold that built the familyÔÇÖs legend veined through its roots. It has never been taken. The Casterlys held it first, in the dawn of days, until Lann the Clever talked them out of it ÔÇö the founding myth of a house that has always preferred to win before the fighting starts.

The Rock is the taleÔÇÖs great off-stage presence: the vault every promise is drawn against. A Lannister always pays his debts because the Rock can ÔÇö until, in the warÔÇÖs late years, the famous mines run dry and the realm discovers that the lions have been spending reputation for some time. Tywin ruled the West from here in the long years of his restoration, scouring the memory of his weak father with the thoroughness that gave the realm the Rains of Castamere; the Rock under Tywin is less a home than the headquarters of a doctrine.

For Tyrion the Rock is the inheritance he is owed and refused. By every law it is his ÔÇö the eldest surviving son once Jaime takes the white ÔÇö and his fatherÔÇÖs answer, delivered with cold precision, is that Tyrion will have Casterly Rock never. The denied Rock shapes half the story: it is the grievance under the patricide, and the prize Daenerys later dangles to price her HandÔÇÖs loyalty. Few castles in the tale do so much work while staying so resolutely off-screen.

When the Rock finally sees war, the war has moved on. The Unsullied storm it through the drains ÔÇö a back door built, with perfect irony, by the young Tyrion who oversaw the sewers ÔÇö and find the larder bare and the garrison gone: Casterly Rock traded like a counter while the real Lannister army marches elsewhere. The impregnable Rock ends the story as its emptiest symbol ÔÇö proof that a fortress is only as meaningful as what its family left inside.

The page and the screen

The published books never once set a scene at Casterly Rock ÔÇö it exists entirely in memory, threat and ledger, which is very Lannister of it. The showÔÇÖs seventh-season assault, TyrionÔÇÖs sewer-gate narration and the empty-larder trap are all invention without page equivalents; book readersÔÇÖ closest look remains TyrionÔÇÖs recollections, including the grim episode of Tysha that the show quietly cut, which on the page is the RockÔÇÖs cruelest memory and the true charge in his last conversation with his father.
