The fuller tale

At the WallÔÇÖs eastern end, where the ice walks out to meet the Bay of Seals, Eastwatch is the NightÔÇÖs WatchÔÇÖs window on the world ÔÇö its only port, its fishing fleet, its smugglersÔÇÖ gossip and its grey-water trade. Supplies land here, ships patrol for raiders slipping around the Wall by sea, and the castle has always been a shade saltier and less regulation than its inland sisters.

The show hands Eastwatch the storyÔÇÖs hinge. It is the sally port for the maddest errand of the war ÔÇö a handful of famous swords marching out to kidnap a dead man ÔÇö and it is where the debt comes due: the Night KingÔÇÖs risen dragon takes the Wall down at Eastwatch in a storm of blue fire, and the castle that watched the sea for eight thousand years is the door the dead finally walk through.
