He walked through dragonfire to take Bran beneath the heart tree, and never saw the knife change hands. Arya Stark's Valyrian dagger ÔÇö the same blade sent for Bran's throat years before ÔÇö shattered him and all his host with him.
He dies at the moment of his victory, in the godswood of Winterfell. The Long Night has gone entirely his way: the Dothraki extinguished, the living penned, his generals fanned out behind him as he walks ÔÇö unhurried, through dragonfire that does not mark him ÔÇö to the heart tree where Bran Stark waits as bait that both sides understand is the true prize. Theon GreyjoyÔÇÖs charge buys seconds; the Night King reaches for his sword to finish the worldÔÇÖs memory in person ÔÇö and Arya Stark comes out of the dark. He catches her by the throat and the wrist, and she drops the Valyrian dagger from one hand to the other and drives it into him: the same catspaw blade once sent to open BranÔÇÖs throat, delivered by the girl no prophecy named. He shatters like river ice, and his lieutenants and his hundred thousand dead go down with him in the same breath ÔÇö a war eight thousand years in the making, ended in a single movement of a hand. The books, which have no Night King, owe no such death; their long night is still coming.

Where the page and the screen part
There is no Night King in the published books. The Others of the page are a species, not a hierarchy ÔÇö beautiful, terrible figures of mist and crystal who speak in voices like cracking ice, duel with blades that shatter steel, and appear in person only a handful of times in five volumes; no throne, no general, no chained dragon, and their purposes are entirely unrevealed. The show invented a commander to give its long war a face and a kill condition ÔÇö and, in the touch-mark on BranÔÇÖs arm and the hunt for the Three-Eyed Raven, a personal plot the books show no sign of. Readers hunting his book-shadow find only legend: the NightÔÇÖs King (with the possessive), thirteenth Lord Commander of the NightÔÇÖs Watch, who wed a corpse-pale woman beyond the Wall, ruled the Nightfort as a sorcerer-king for thirteen dark years, and was struck from every record ÔÇö a cautionary tale Old Nan tells, not a monster on the march. The show borrowed the resonance of the name and built a new being under it.
The divergence matters structurally. In the books the Others remain weather ÔÇö a pressure on the worldÔÇÖs northern edge, undefeatable because unlocated ÔÇö and whatever answer the novels intend for them is still sealed. The showÔÇÖs invention made the apocalypse mortal: one being, one heart of ice, one knife. Whether the booksÔÇÖ colder, faceless version will end by sword, pact, or something stranger is among the largest open questions in the saga; the one certainty is that it cannot end the way the showÔÇÖs did, because the target the show built does not exist on the page.
