The fuller tale

A shipwright's son from Hull, on Driftmark's own shores, Alyn carries Velaryon-silver hair and a face that half the court privately suspects belongs to a bastard branch of the family — an unspoken parentage that follows him through a career as one more capable sailor in the Sea Snake's enormous fleet.

Corlys Velaryon, whatever he may privately know or suspect about Alyn's paternity, watches the young sailor's career with an attentiveness that goes well beyond ordinary interest in a talented crewman — the kind of attention a man pays when he is quietly deciding what a bastard's blood might yet be worth to a family that has just lost so many of its legitimate heirs.

Alyn's story is developed at greater length in Fire & Blood, which follows his rise through Corlys's fleet in more explicit detail across the war's naval campaigns; the show's current seasons have introduced him but have not yet dramatized the fuller arc the book affords him.
