Privacy Policy
How The Known Realm handles information about you — in plain words. Last updated: 29 July 2026.
The Known Realm (“the site”, “we”) is an unofficial fan companion to the worlds of A Song of Ice and Fire and their television adaptations. It is made and operated by Jon-Anders Haukøy (“the operator”), a private individual. This policy explains what limited information the site handles, why, and the choices you have. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the site.
The short version
The site asks for nothing. There are no accounts, no login, no sign-up and no contact forms; we do not collect your name, address or any other personal detail. The site currently shows no advertising and runs no analytics, and it sets no cookies of its own. The only information kept is your own settings and game progress, saved only in your own browser and never sent to us.
Information stored on your device (local storage)
To make the games and the reading experience work, the site saves small amounts of data in your browser’s local storage. This never leaves your device and is not personal information about you. It includes:
- your day/night theme choice (
kwTheme); - your spoiler-shield setting for the games (
tvShield); - your progress and results in the daily games — the Small Council, Wordle, Higher or Lower,
Who Said It and the rest (
scProgress,drDaily:*,hlBest, the Wordle and streak keys, and similar); - your chosen base map, and your cookie/consent preference (
kwConsent), so we do not ask again on every visit.
You can clear all of it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data for this site. Nothing here identifies you, and none of it is transmitted to the operator.
Advertising and analytics
The site does not currently show ads or run any analytics, and it does not set or allow any third-party tracking cookies. The consent banner you see on your first visit simply records a forward-looking preference. If advertising or analytics are ever introduced — to help support the site — this policy will be updated first, the vendors named, and any non-essential cookies will be set only after you have given consent through that banner (and, in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, through a recognised consent framework). Until then, there is nothing of the kind to consent to.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. This site sets no cookies. The preferences described above are kept in local storage, a related browser feature, and are strictly necessary to make the site function (your theme, your settings, your game progress, and your consent choice itself). You can change or erase them at any time from the “Cookie choices” link in the footer or by clearing your site data.
Your rights
Because the site collects no account data and stores your settings only on your own device, your data is already entirely in your hands — you can view, change or erase it by managing your browser storage. Where the GDPR or comparable law applies, you also have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to processing of any personal data held about you, and to lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority (in Norway, Datatilsynet). Children
The site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under the age of digital consent in their country. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Hosting & server logs
The site is a set of static pages hosted on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc.). Like any web host, GitHub may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses and requested pages) for security and reliability, under its own privacy policy. We do not sell, and have no way to sell, your personal data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site grows. The “last updated” date above will change when we do, and any change that would introduce advertising or analytics will prompt the consent banner to ask before anything is set.
