Terms of Service

By using The Known Realm (“the site”) you agree to these terms. The site is made and operated by Jon-Anders Haukøy (“the operator”, “we”, “us”), a private individual. If you do not agree with any part of them, please do not use the site.

1. What this site is

The Known Realm is a free, unofficial fan companion — interactive maps, an encyclopedia, family trees, a chronicle and a set of games — devoted to the fictional worlds of A Song of Ice and Fire, the Tales of Dunk and Egg, and their television adaptations. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored, or approved by George R.R. Martin, Home Box Office, Inc., Warner Bros. Discovery, or any related party. All franchise names, characters and places belong to their respective owners and are used only to describe and comment on those works. Full attribution is on the Credits & Licenses page.

2. Use of the site

You may read, play and share links to the site for your own personal, non-commercial enjoyment. You agree not to: use the site unlawfully; attempt to disrupt, overload, hack or reverse the site or its hosting; scrape or bulk-copy its original written content or artwork for republication; or strip, obscure or misrepresent its notices and attributions. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the site at any time without notice.

3. Original content and intellectual property

The prose, the code, the layout, the site’s own artwork — including the painted scenes in the gallery, the base map, and the weirwood emblem — and the games on this site are the original work of Jon-Anders Haukøy, created for this site (with the aid of AI image tools under the operator’s own direction, selection and editing), and are the operator’s property. All rights are reserved: you may not copy, redistribute or reuse them beyond ordinary personal viewing and fair linking without written permission, and not at all for commercial purposes. The underlying fictional worlds, and the small promotional television stills and the community-made heraldry shown for identification and commentary, remain the property of their respective rights holders (see the Credits page); those third-party images are used temporarily and are being replaced with the operator’s own artwork. Rights holders may request removal of any material via the contact address below, and such requests will be honored promptly.

4. Spoilers

The site is, by its nature, full of spoilers for the books and the shows. Tools such as the spoiler shield are provided as a courtesy to help you avoid what you have not yet reached, but they are best-effort and imperfect. You use the site understanding that story details may be revealed, and the operator is not responsible for spoiling a plot for you.

5. Advertising and third-party links

The site currently shows no advertising. It may contain links to third-party sites (such as the fonts, icons and wikis credited on the Credits page); we do not control and are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites. If advertising is ever introduced, how it and any cookies are handled will be described in the Privacy Policy before it begins.

6. No warranty

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that it will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted or error-free. The chronicle is a work of fan scholarship about fiction and should not be relied upon as authoritative.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator will not be liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the site. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

8. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms from time to time; the “last updated” date above will change when we do, and continued use of the site means you accept the revised terms. These terms are governed by the laws of Norway, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
