The fuller tale

Called Breakbones for his strength, Harwin Strong is by wide consensus the finest knight in the realm during his years of service — captain of the City Watch's gold cloaks and, less officially but more consequentially, sworn protector of Princess Rhaenyra's household through precisely the years her three sons are born with unmistakably brown hair in a family of silver.

The court's whispers about the boys' true parentage settle, more than on anyone else, on Harwin — a suspicion neither confirmed nor denied by anyone with actual knowledge, but persistent enough that it eventually costs him his position, his standing, and finally his safety.

When the scandal grows too large to manage quietly, Harwin is dismissed from the gold cloaks and sent home to Harrenhal to his father — ostensibly a retreat from court politics, though both tellings make clear the timing is anything but coincidental, arriving just before the fire that kills him.
