The fuller tale
Lord of Harrenhal and a career royal servant, Lyonel Strong rises through Viserys's court from master of laws to Hand of the King on the strength of a rare and valuable trait in that particular office: he gives honest answers to dangerous questions, even when the honest answer is not the one the king wants.
His two sons could not be more different in temperament — Harwin, all muscle and blunt loyalty, captain of the City Watch's gold cloaks; and Larys, clubfooted, quiet, and a great deal more dangerous than his brother in every way that does not involve a sword. Lyonel's household is, in miniature, the whole realm's coming conflict between force and cunning.
As the paternity questions swirling around Rhaenyra's sons grow impossible to ignore — questions that touch his own family directly, since Harwin is widely believed to be the boys' true father — Lyonel finds his position as Hand increasingly untenable, and asks leave to resign not once but twice, aware of exactly what the court whispers about his household.
The page and the screen
Both tellings put Lyonel and Harwin's deaths in the same fire at Harrenhal, though the show is considerably more explicit about who set it and why — attributing the arson directly to Larys, acting to both protect the crown's reputation and clear his own path to his father's title. Fire & Blood is deliberately less certain, preserving multiple competing explanations — the castle's old curse, Larys's ambition, or a king quietly cleaning up his daughter's scandal — without settling on one.

The Hand of the King asked leave to resign twice, knowing what the court whispered about his son and the princess. He died in his own castle's flames beside that son — a fire his other son arranged, and billed to the queen as a kindness.
The show has Larys arrange the fire that kills both his father and his brother at Harrenhal, framing it as a service performed for the crown's convenience as much as for his own inheritance — Lyonel, who had already asked twice to resign the Handship rather than remain entangled in the paternity scandal, dies in the flames before he can complete his own quiet exit from court.
Fire & Blood records the fire and the deaths without confirming the cause: whether Harrenhal's own ancient curse claimed another lord, whether Larys set the blaze deliberately, or whether the fire was simple accident, the maesters' sources disagree, and Gyldayn declines to adjudicate between them — noting only that the timing, for Larys, could not have been more convenient.
