The Clubfoot: master of whisperers in all but title, collector of other people's secrets and debts. Things Larys wants tend to burn their way to him.

The fuller tale

Lyonel's younger son, born with a clubbed foot that excludes him from the martial career his family and his era both expect of a lord's son, Larys compensates with an entirely different set of talents — patience, observation, and an instinct for finding and keeping other people's secrets that eventually makes him, in all but formal title, master of whisperers.

Where his brother Harwin trades in strength, Larys trades in leverage, cultivating a network of informants and collecting debts of information that he spends with exquisite timing throughout the war's political maneuvering — a man who understands, better than almost anyone else at court, that knowing a secret is worth considerably more than acting on it immediately.

The things Larys wants have an unsettling tendency to burn — a pattern both tellings notice and neither fully explains, whether that means his father and brother at Harrenhal or later obstacles that clear themselves from his path with similarly convenient timing. He inherits Harrenhal and his father's title in circumstances that serve his own interests so precisely it becomes, over time, difficult to read as coincidence.

As the war progresses, Larys serves the green council in an advisory capacity that lets him operate largely outside the war's actual fighting, trading information and influence rather than swords — a position that keeps him alive and relevant through nearly the entire conflict while men with more conventional courage around him are steadily consumed by it.

The page and the screen

The show, in its aired seasons, has made Larys's manipulations considerably more explicit and visible to the audience than Fire & Blood's chronicle allows — viewers witness his scheming directly, while the book's sources can only infer his hand in events after the fact, from the pattern of who benefits. This is one of the more significant divergences in how much certainty either version grants the audience about a deliberately opaque character.

The books: Beheaded in the Hour of the Wolf (F&B, ch. 8)

The Clubfoot outlived every master he served and every fire he set, until the Hour of the Wolf. Cregan Stark offered the Wall; Larys chose the block with a shrug, and House Strong's strange line ended where its castle's curse said it would.

The series has not yet reached the postwar reckoning where Larys's story ends; his fate remains ahead of the current seasons.

Fire & Blood has him outlive nearly every master he ever served and every fire he is suspected of setting, only to be caught out at last in the purge later chroniclers call the Hour of the Wolf — a reckoning conducted by Cregan Stark as the new regency asserts control. Offered the comparatively merciful sentence of exile to the Night's Watch, Larys instead accepts the block with what the book describes as an indifferent shrug, and House Strong's strange, quietly murderous line ends at Harrenhal roughly where its old curse always promised it eventually would.
