The fuller tale

Rhaenyra and Daemon's younger son carries his grandfather's name and, fittingly, an unhatched dragon's egg he keeps close through the war's worst years — a boy defined, for most of his brief appearance in the histories, by an egg that stubbornly refuses to quicken no matter how carefully it is kept warm.

As the fighting closes in on Dragonstone and the family's other strongholds, he is judged too young and too vulnerable to keep near the war's center, and is sent overseas for his own safety — one small, sensible mercy in a family history otherwise defined by the refusal to spare its children anything.

The page and the screen

Both tellings keep Viserys the Younger a minor, largely symbolic figure — his unhatched egg functions almost identically in each version as a quiet emblem of a future the war may or may not permit him to reach, and neither the show nor the book gives him significant independent action beyond his eventual departure from Westeros.
